The first 21 ContainerArt exhibition spaces were opened in Bergamo, Italy by its founder, Ronald Lewis Facchinetti at 5 am on Oct 14th 2005. The initial driving idea was to create intimate spaces for contemplation of art, protected from the environment and regardless of the context. The ubiquity of containers and their ease of transportation has allowed ContainerArt to experiment with new approaches to museology and artistic site-specific theory. These days the focus is architectural: the ContainerArt curatorial community is experimenting with temporary museums built out of several containers and finding ways to connect them, conceptually and even digitally using network theories and hub-spoke models. At the end of each event, Containers are returned to their normal activity as transportation devices after being, for a short while, receptacles for the contemplation of art.
